GFDD’s ReCrearte program continues it full schedule of lectures and workshops in and around Santo Domingo. Recently they paid a visit to a group of women and girls in Los Frailes 2 where participants had a blast learning about recycling and reusing instead of tossing their trash.
The group, comprised of 13 people, began their workshop with an interesting lecture on the importance of taking care of Mother Earth and the resources she provides us.
Lucia Marte, ReCrearte program coordinator, initially focused on offering important information on how to avoid the accumulation of trash in the communities (by reducing). In the second part of the activity, participants learned how to make bags and purses out of fabric that would otherwise have been discarded. This activity enables women to create innovative and unique designs out of blouses, pants and fabric they no longer use, rather than discarding it.
One participant, Lidia Vitorino, was pleased with the activity as a highlight of the overall program, especially reusing fabric from used clothing they would have otherwise thrown out.
The gathering was held in coordination with the Club de Madres y Junta de Vecinos (Mothers Club and Neighborhood Committee) on January 25, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Abut ReCrearte:
ReCrearte works with the most disadvantaged communities who receive training in the art of recycling and creating objects with waste while, at the same time, learning skills they can use to ultimately create an alternative source of income for themselves and their families. The program raises awareness of the golden rule of the 3Rs of solid waste management: reduce, reuse, recycle. The workshops also emphasize and demonstrate how recycling waste into art can strengthen and empower individuals and communities alike.

The ReCrearte program, in coordination with the Fundación Un Toque de Luz (Touch of Light Foundation), held an interesting workshop at the El Túnel School, in the Capotillo Sector, one the the most vulnerable areas in the country.
A diverse group of pre-teens and teenagers, 11 through 15, greeted ReCrearte’s program manager, Lucia Marte, who talked to them about the causes and consequences of water pollution, which was especially relevant because the school is located on the banks of the Isabela River. She also taught the children how to make fish figures by reusing the milk and juice cartons from their school breakfast.
Two of their teachers and a representative from the Un Toque de Luz Foundation were also at the activity. Professor Jacinta Castillo noted that the workshop was extremely valuable and appropriate for the reality in which the students live. The activity was held on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Having returned to Santo Domingo, for GFDD’s ReCrearte Program, it’s back to business as usual. And that means discussions and workshops with communities in need in the capital’s metropolitan area of nearly 3.7 million inhabitants.
The first activity of the week took place on Monday, October 2nd, when program coordinator Lucía Marte hosted a creative recycling workshop at the Escuela Unidas 27 de Febrero, where children and adults alike participated in discussions on the importance of recycling, followed by creative recycling workshops. The event inspired at least one participant – Rafael Vladimir Pérez, who expressed his desire to continue working with recycled materials to help his community.
On Wednesday, October 4th, ReCrearte’s second workshop of the week took place in the Escuela República de Perú. There, the discussion focused on the accumulation of plastic in the world’s oceans and the impact that it has on marine life. Though new technologies are being proposed to combat this, the best solution is to be conscious about what you use, to reuse what you can, and to assure proper management of solid waste. After the discussion, attending schoolchildren created arts and crafts out of recycled materials.
During Wednesday’s workshop, Noelia Cuevas Contreras stated: “United, we can save Planet Earth.” ReCrearte couldn’t agree more.
About ReCrearte:
The ReCrearte program works with the most disadvantaged communities, who receive training in the art of recycling and creating new objects from waste and simultaneously learn to develop an alternative source of income. The program revolves around the “three golden rules” (or 3Rs) for the proper management of solid waste: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The workshops demonstrate and emphasize the idea that recycling waste and transforming it into art and objects for daily use strengthens individuals and communities alike.
