In the hot Santo Domingo summers, sometimes it’s good to stay out of the sun, to focus on activities which won’t make you sweat, and to learn life skills which can lead to a better you and a better planet. To that end, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development’s (GFDD) ReCrearte program held two workshops in the headquarters of Funglode on August 9th and 10th.
At the workshops, over 60 young participants and adults were presented with recycled fabric of all colors and given free rein to let their imaginations soar. They created multi-colored bracelets, wallets, and purses with the help of ReCrearte coordinator, Lucía Marte. During the event, Marte also led a discussion on the importance of recycling to waste management, showing to participants everyday objects made from recycled materials.
About ReCrearte:
The ReCrearte program works with the most disadvantaged communities, who receive training in the art of recycling and creating new objects from waste and simultaneously learn to develop an alternative source of income. The program revolves around the “three golden rules” (or 3Rs) for the proper management of solid waste: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The workshops demonstrate and emphasize the idea that recycling waste and transforming it into art and objects for daily use strengthens individuals and communities alike.
