A total of 25 students from the Escuela Eugenio de Jesús Marcano Fonder, in San Antonio Guerra, accompanied by teachers and dozens of members from the local Community, participated in a ReCrearte workshop in which they learned to make ash and oil soaps in an educational and entertaining activity.
Lucia Marte, coordinator of the GFDD/Funglode ReCrearte program, led the workshop which took place on May 2 and was done in coordination with the ECOESCUELA project of the Dominican Republic Institute for Environmental Law (IDARD, for its acronym in Spanish).
The wood ash lye is easily made using the remains of burned wood that is free of chemicals. Stoves and fireplaces supply good ash if they do not burn remains of different materials from wood and cellulose. The harder the wood, the better the quality of the ash and lye.
About ReCrearte
The ReCrearte program works with the most disadvantaged communities, who receive training in the art of recycling and creating new objects from waste and simultaneously learn to develop an alternative source of income. The program revolves around the “three golden rules” (or 3Rs) for the proper management of solid waste: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The workshops demonstrate and emphasize the idea that recycling waste and transforming it into art and objects for daily use strengthen individuals and communities alike.
