The series of ReCrearte workshops that took place in the Beth Hashem church in Santo Domingo concluded last October 29th, after four beautiful activities in which 20 community women participated
promptly every week with joy and enthusiasm to learn the art of recycling and how to create new objects using waste. Currently, there is only one activity remaining, in which all crafts that have been created will be exhibited and views on what has been learned and how valuable it is for their lives will be shared.
The women who participated in the workshops created all kinds of objects, including baskets using newspapers; table mats and carpets with discarded clothing; Christmas ornaments from paper; as well as flowers and hair accessories and necklaces.
“You just have to look at these ladies’ happy faces after creating their own accessories using materials they never imagined that would be helpful to them, and which would end up who knows where”, said Berta Santana, the project Coordinator, with great satisfaction after the last workshop.
For the institutions who organize the ReCrearte program, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode), knowing that the initial goal of the workshops of training recycling advocates and entrepreneurs among community parishioners was fully achieved is highly satisfactory. At the same time, it meets the overall purpose of the program of fostering a new generation of artists who can serve as multipliers and waste management leaders in their own communities.
