New York, March 17, 2016
As part of a series of workshops, organized by GFDD’s ReCrearte program through March in New York, on Wednesday the 16th, Juan Pablo Duarte School opened its doors to around 60 parents and 30 children.
The workshop by ReCrearte coordinator Bertha Santana was possible thanks to the collaboration of the institution´s Parents Association, in particular Carmen Rojas, and the support of the Dominican Consulate in NY.
Yamile Eusebio, Director of GFDD’s New York Office, welcomed the participants by presenting the various programs of the Foundation and introducing Bertha, who gave a brief presentation of the program and its impact in the Dominican Republic, and showcased pieces made by Dominican women of scarce resources.
The workshop, which intended to teach parents and children to develop a tote bag from an old blouse, was a success as expressed by Carmen Rojas testimony, leader of the Parents Association. Carmen thanked Funglode/GFDD for the initiative and said:” For me it was a surprise because when we were told that it was a recycling workshop I understood it was something simple but I see now that it is something wonderful that can generate revenue. Here there is so much garbage and think that obtaining income from it is a great opportunity. We congratulate you for your work with the Dominican community and count us on for other workshops that empower the people".
The participants also stated the desire for a one day workshop for adults, in order to instruct parents to create objects and art from the trash.
About ReCrearte
ReCrearte works with disadvantaged members of the community who receive training in recycled art and creating objects from trash. They also learn the “three gold rules” or the 3Rs for the proper management of solid waste: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The workshops demonstrate and underscore the idea that recycling and turning waste into art strengthens individuals as well as communities.
