Maintaining its focus on outreach to the Dominican Republic’s most disadvantaged communities, GFDD’s ReCrearte program held a workshop in the Invi Cea neighborhood in San Cristóbal’s municipality of Haina on Saturday, August 19th. After a scheduling conflict with the planned venue, Mrs. Santa Acosta, a member of the local community, graciously offered the space of her home to the day’s participants.
For three hours, a group of approximately 30 youngsters and adults shared a day of games, arts & crafts, and recycling with the ReCrearte program coordinator. Some of the topics discussed during the day’s conversation were the importance of planet Earth and its resources as well as the measures that should be taken to reduce the accumulation of waste in communities. Not to be left out, the three golden rules were outlined as the cornerstone for all waste management efforts.
For the artistic portion of the day’s activities, recycled papers and fabric were used to create bouquets of colorful flowers and a number of accessories. While the children greatly enjoyed this portion of the activity, their parents appreciated it even more, stating that they were happy that their children had learned to create useful objects from recycled materials.
About ReCrearte:
The ReCrearte program works with the most disadvantaged communities, who receive training in the art of recycling and creating new objects from waste and simultaneously learn to develop an alternative source of income. The program revolves around the “three golden rules” (or 3Rs) for the proper management of solid waste: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The workshops demonstrate and emphasize the idea that recycling waste and transforming it into art and objects for daily use strengthens individuals and communities alike.
