San Jose de las Matas, August 19, 2016
In collaboration with Plan Sierra, the ReCrearte program, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), organized on August 4 and 18, two creative recycling workshops, following up on the workshops held in July.
More than 15 women of the Mothers Club of Las Placetas, from the Zero Waste program, on August 4 continued creating bags, dream catchers and ornaments for the house; crafts that had been introduced by the coordinator of RECREARTE, Bertha Santana, during her previous visit.
On Thursday August 18, the mothers were taught how to perfect the finishing of the objects, while in the afternoon they discussed the issue of how to present their work to the potential customers and sales strategies. To end the day the pieces created by the women were gathered for an exhibition where they also spoke about their experiences with ReCrearte.
All participants were very grateful for the efforts that the program takes to reach them with workshops imparting knowledge on creating handicrafts made from recycled materials and natural elements, and teaching them how recycling can be vehicle to protect the environment.
About ReCrearte
The ReCrearte program works with the most disadvantaged members of the community, who receive training in the art of recycling and creating new objects from waste and simultaneously learn to develop an alternative source of income. The program revolves around the “three golden rules” (or 3Rs) for the proper management of solid waste: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The workshops demonstrate and emphasize the idea that recycling waste and transforming it into art and objects for daily use strengthen individuals and communities alike.
