Monday, March 7, the ReCrearte program met with students from 5th to 8th grade at New Horizons Bilingual School to talk about the possibilities of creative recycling.
Examples of objects made with recycled materials, in particular personal use objects, were brought to their attention.
The students were accompanied by the teacher Ivonne Guzmán, whom had the idea of founding a club of recyclers of New Horizons. During the workshop the conversation focused on the children’s concerns about recycling, in particular on creative recycling.
ReCrearte, an initiative of GFDD/Funglode, focuses on the three R’s of sustainability- reduce, reuse, and recycle and its workshops concentrate on repurposing discarded materials into new objects. At the end of the workshop the students were thrilled with the idea of making gifts for their mothers, decorating their rooms, and organizing an exhibition, at school, of objects they would make. Some expressed the willingness to learn more about recycling and wanting to be artistic recyclers when they grew up, all were amazed by how much they could create out of disposable materials.
About ReCrearte
ReCrearte works with the most disadvantaged members of the community who receive training in the art of recycling and creating new objects from waste and, at the same time, learn to develop an alternative source of income. The program revolves around the "three golden rules" - or 3Rs - for the proper management of solid waste: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The workshops demonstrate and emphasize the idea that recycling waste and transforming it into art strengthens both individuals and communities alike.
