On October 1st, the Ministerio Beth Hashem Casa de Dios in Santo Domingo hosted the first of four ReCrearte workshops that will be held during the month of October under the direction of Bertha Santana, program Coordinator.
On this occasion, a total of 14 women participated in induction and awareness lectures and in a crafts workshop using recycled materials such as fabrics and paper.
The workshop began with Santana’s introduction regarding the importance of recycling as an activity that can be developed individually in each of the participants’ homes, thereby fulfilling the goal of becoming promoters of recycling among their church members.
As explained by the Coordinator of the ReCrearte program, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), the participants were highly motivated to give continuity to the program and to invite more community members to participate in subsequent workshops, which are to be held on October 8th, 15th and 22nd, 2014.
The ReCrearte program aims to increase awareness on the 3Rs of proper solid waste management: reduce, reuse and recycle. The workshops also emphasize and demonstrate how recycling waste into art can empower individuals and communities alike. Through this program, GFDD seeks that the participation of youth groups, women's associations and educators will lead them into reformulating the way they think about waste and the problem of plastic pollution.
