Global Foundation for Democracy and Development’s ReCrearte program headed over to the Professor Eladio Antonio Aquino Rojas School in the municipal district of La Caleta and the Bethel Temple in Santo Domingo’s Barrio Nuevo to hold workshops on August 11th and 14th.
During the workshops, ReCrearte program coordinator Lucía Marte led a discussion on the three golden rules of solid waste management and taught approximately 100 children and adults to make bracelets, handbags, and various accessories from recycled fabric and materials. Through the youngsters’ creation of a mixture of functional and decorative items, the workshops reinforced that recycling and waste management has not only a main purpose, but also added side-benefits to yourself and others.
About ReCrearte:
The ReCrearte program works with the most disadvantaged communities, who receive training in the art of recycling and creating new objects from waste and simultaneously learn to develop an alternative source of income. The program revolves around the “three golden rules” (or 3Rs) for the proper management of solid waste: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The workshops demonstrate and emphasize the idea that recycling waste and transforming it into art and objects for daily use strengthens individuals and communities alike.
