A total of 30 teachers and 8 volunteers from the Taiwanese Tzu Chi Foundation participated in the first of four ReCrearte workshops, which took place last October 22nd in the school of the same name in La Romana.
ReCrearte is a project of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD).
Under the direction of the Project Coordinator, Bertha Santana, the goal of these workshops is to bring the school’s teachers together in a space where they can reflect on environmental protection, recycling and creating products using recycled material. The lessons they learn during these workshops will be duplicated with the students.
According to Santana, the group was very enthusiastic and participated very actively in the workshop, thus becoming "motivated to attract more participants."
At the conclusion of the activity the school Principal, Juana Polanco, thanked Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) and GFDD for bringing the ReCrearte workshop to their facilities, "as an example of how to value and take advantage of the resources available in the community."
The goal of the ReCrearte program is to raise awareness of the 3Rs of proper waste management: reduce, reuse and recycle. The workshops also emphasize and demonstrate how recycling waste into art can empower individuals and communities alike. Through this program, the objective of GFDD is that the participation of youth groups, women's associations and educators will lead them into reformulating the way they think about waste and the problem of plastic pollution.
