Over the weekend, GFDD’s ReCrearte program traveled to Azua province to support and provide activities for the SuperNova project being held at the Héctor J. Díaz Cultural Center.. The project, a day of community-focused work, aimed to reach out to the surrounding areas in support of common goals.
ReCrearte coordinator Lucía Marte led discussions throughout the day on topics such as the implications of global warming, adaptation strategies to climate change, and measures which can be taken to slow it. To highlight recycling’s role in all of this, Marte guided participants in two workshops focusing on the creation of flowers, accessories, and a number of very creative art pieces from recycled plastic bottles and cardboard. The workshops were attended by over 125 children and adults from the surrounding areas. Yerainis Ortiz, a 14 year-old participant in the day’s events, said that she “would continue to share what she had learned with other people.”
After the event, ReCrearte’s role was recognized by the project committee as being a “source of change, love, and support which has raised the quality of life for hundreds of adolescents.”
About ReCrearte:
The ReCrearte program works with the most disadvantaged communities, who receive training in the art of recycling and creating new objects from waste and simultaneously learn to develop an alternative source of income. The program revolves around the “three golden rules” (or 3Rs) for the proper management of solid waste: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The workshops demonstrate and emphasize the idea that recycling waste and transforming it into art and objects for daily use strengthens individuals and communities alike.
