Students from the Escuela Ismael Miranda in Luperón de Enriquillo, Barahona, met with ReCrearte coordinator Lucia Marte for a workshop on environmental sustainability this past Tuesday, March 21, 2017.
The 30 youngsters, aged 10 to 15, spent the morning creating earrings and bracelets out of used clothing. Marte also led the group, which included three teachers from the school, in a discussion about environmentalism and the Rs for the proper management of waste: reduce, reuse and recycle.
Marte says, “ these types of workshops are in support of ReCrearte’s mission to create collective awareness in the Dominican Republic and elsewhere about our responsibility to take care of the environment”. The ReCrearte coordinator looks forward to continuing such programs at other schools in the future.
The workshop was part of the ECOESCUELA project of the Dominican Republic Institute for Environmental Law (IDARD, for its acronym in Spanish). The ECOESCUELA project organizes educational programs where community members can gather to practice environmental sustainability and work together to support recycling efforts in their neighborhoods and local schools.
About ReCrearte
The ReCrearte program works with the most disadvantaged communities, who receive training in the art of recycling and creating new objects from waste and simultaneously learn to develop an alternative source of income. The program revolves around the “three golden rules” (or 3Rs) for the proper management of solid waste: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The workshops demonstrate and emphasize the idea that recycling waste and transforming it into art and objects for daily use strengthen individuals and communities alike.
