Santiago de los Caballeros - In order to raise awareness about issues affecting the environment and deepen their understanding, two initiatives of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) ReCreate and the Year Round Environmental Film Screenings program, presented a workshop and the screening of the short film Garbage or Resource? A Dominican Republic Experience, in the Dominican School of Santiago last February 15.
More than 30 students aged 10 to 12 participated in the activity, enthusiastic about acquiring the basic principles of recycling with the intention of assuming their role. After the screening of the GFDD short film Garbage or Resource? A Dominican Republic Experience, which shows us how recycling has become an important economic opportunity for Dominicans, the coordinator of ReCrearte, Lucia Marte, taught a creative recycling workshop.
During the workshop the children created flowers and jars from plastic bottles and learned about the three golden rules for solid waste management: reduce, reuse and recycle. The ReCrearte workshops focus on divulging knowledge about the transformation of waste materials into new objects
As Omar Shamir Reynoso, GFDD's environmental programs coordinator, explains, "the screening of the short film and the workshop served as facilitators for students to be sensitized to the subject of recycling, and it proved to be a successful synergy."
About ReCrearte
The ReCrearte program works with the most disadvantaged communities, who receive training in the art of recycling and creating new objects from waste and simultaneously learn to develop an alternative source of income. The program revolves around the “three golden rules” (or 3Rs) for the proper management of solid waste: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The workshops demonstrate and emphasize the idea that recycling waste and transforming it into art and objects for daily use strengthen individuals and communities alike.
About Year Round Environmental Film Screening Program
As part of its mission to reach more communities, institutions and individuals around the country, the DR Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) organizes year-round film screenings that bring interesting and important films to new and remote communities. By showing a diverse selection of quality movies on critical environmental and sustainable development issues and organizing discussions and workshops, the year-round film screenings program fosters and inspires dialogue, raises awareness and promotes sustainable practices.
