Santo Domingo, January 25, 2016
Managers, quality and environmental technicians, janitors and other employees of Gas Natural Fenosa, Generadora Palmara La Vega y Generadora Palmara Santo Domingo, gathered, Wednesday 20 and Friday 22, at a creative recycling workshop organized by ReCrearte to learn about environmental responsibility.
ReCrearte, an initiative of GFDD/Funglode, coordinated by Bertha Santana, focuses on the three R’s of sustainability- reduce, reuse, and recycle. Workshops concentrate on repurposing discarded materials into new objects that can be sold for income. In this case, employees experimented creative recycling through the production of bags.
The experience was very positive as expressed by the words of the participants , who were enthusiastic about the excellence of the workshop and the amenity of being able to learn while having fun . Aracelis Melo thanked for such good reusable ideas, while her colleague Evelin Perez said the workshop was " excellent, very productive, entertaining, of high quality, and offered her personal, economic and intellectual growth, while helping to cooperate with our environment". Others, like Joseph Marty, advised that the project would continue throughout the country, and even skeptics were convinced by the workshop. Maria Luisa Mateo, who at first did not want to join, said at the end “I'm glad I participated, I felt very motivated to recycle. I'm happy I came, I do not regret it, I like everything I learned and the teacher was very thorough.”
About ReCrearte
ReCrearte works with the most disadvantaged members of the community who receive training in the art of recycling and creating new objects from waste and, at the same time, learn to develop an alternative source of income. The program revolves around the "three golden rules" - or 3Rs - for the proper management of solid waste: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The workshops demonstrate and emphasize the idea that recycling waste and transforming it into art strengthens both individuals and communities alike.
