On Wednesday, April 19, ReCrearte coordinator Lucia Marte visited the Escuela Batey Esperanza for a recycling workshop with 23 young students from that school. In attempt to promote awareness about environmental issues, and at the same time promote the protection of the planet and its natural resources, Marte led the students in fun, educational activities with the use of recycled teaching materials.
Among the topics the students learned about were how to identify colors, shapes, senses, and numbers, and how to put together puzzles, play musical instruments and use puppets.
The students, aged five to six, were accompanied by two teachers from their school. This is the second time this year that ReCrearte has held a recycling workshop at the Escuela Batey Esperanza in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic.
This activity was done in collaboration with the ECOESCUELA project of the Dominican Republic Institute for Environmental Law (IDARD, for its acronym in Spanish). The ECOESCUELA project organizes educational programs where community members can gather to practice environmentalism and work together to support recycling efforts in their neighborhoods and local schools.
About ReCrearte
The ReCrearte program works with the most disadvantaged communities, who receive training in the art of recycling and creating new objects from waste and simultaneously learn to develop an alternative source of income. The program revolves around the “three golden rules” (or 3Rs) for the proper management of solid waste: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The workshops demonstrate and emphasize the idea that recycling waste and transforming it into art and objects for daily use strengthen individuals and communities alike.
