New York, March 21, 2016
The City University of New York (CUNY) hosted a workshop of creative recycling organized by the GFDD program ReCrearte, within a series of workshops held in March in New York City, March 17.
The event, led by Bertha Santana, was aimed at women artisans, who learned to recover waste and transform it into new objects and designs. Participants amazingly made personal accessories out of plastic bags.
The women expressed their admiration for the work ReCrearte is doing to help housewives, children and families "so that they also learn to take care of nature and learn a skill to sustain themselves, live and get an alternative income".
Some participants proposed to organize an exhibition and stressed the need to promote the ReCrearte program in schools, as a way to help children learn to care for the planet and to make useful things from residues.
About ReCrearte
ReCrearte works with disadvantaged members of the community who receive training in recycled art and creating objects from trash. They also learn the “three gold rules” or the 3Rs for the proper management of solid waste: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The workshops demonstrate and underscore the idea that recycling and turning waste into art strengthens individuals as well as communities.
