ReCrearte, in collaboration with the ECOESCUELA project of the Dominican Republic Institute for Environmental Law (IDARD, for its acronym in Spanish), hosted an educational recycling workshop for students at the Escuela Profesor Juan Bosch in Santo Domingo on April 28.
As part of the organization’s mission to promote awareness about environmental issues and at the same time promote the protection of the planet and its natural resources, ReCrearte coordinator Lucia Marte guided students through educational games with recycled teaching materials in disuse. Among the subjects the students learned about were how to identity colors, shapes, senses and numbers, and how to put together puzzles, play musical instruments and use theatre puppets.
75 students, joined by three of their teachers, participated in the activities. The youngsters were all between the ages of four and six.
The ECOESCUELA project organizes educational programs where community members can gather to practice environmentalism and work together to support recycling efforts in their neighborhoods and local schools.
About ReCrearte
The ReCrearte program works with the most disadvantaged communities, who receive training in the art of recycling and creating new objects from waste and simultaneously learn to develop an alternative source of income. The program revolves around the “three golden rules” (or 3Rs) for the proper management of solid waste: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The workshops demonstrate and emphasize the idea that recycling waste and transforming it into art and objects for daily use strengthen individuals and communities alike.
