ReCrearte Offers Talk About Creating Decorative Pieces and How to Generate Income Using Recyclable Materials
Santo Domingo, April 23, 2015
In order to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and learn new ways to generate income through recycling Bertha Santana,
Coordinator of ReCrearte program - an initiative of GFDD/Funglode - gave a workshop on Tuesday, April 21 at the Biblioteca infantil y juvenil República Dominicana (BIJRD by its Spanish acronym) in Santo Domingo.
The workshop served to introduce participants to the various economic opportunities that exist to create decorative pieces for the home, hair ornaments and jewelry from recycled materials, and how the commercial development of these products can become a personal and productive initiative for each individual. In these motivational talk children, youth, housewives and teachers worked with seeds, as an example of the sustainable use of a natural resource.
ReCrearte workshops are part of the GFDD´s activities held throughout the year in various communities of the Dominican Republic, which aims to empower participants and develop environmental consciousness.
The program works with disadvantaged members of the communities, by training them in the art of recycling waste to create objects and at the same time, they learn to create an alternative source of income. The program, part of the projects of the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival, revolves around the "three golden rules" or 3R for the proper management of solid waste: reduce, reuse and recycle. The workshops demonstrate and emphasize the idea that recycling waste and transforming it into art strengthens both individuals and communities.
