ReCrearte is on the move! The recycling initiative recently partnered with the Tzu Chi Foundation and travel toThe Caliche, located in the capital’s Villa Duarte district, where 20 housewives learned the art of recycling.
The coordinator of this initiative through GFDD/Funglode, Bertha Santana, taught the group of women how to create handbags with old fabrics, and delivered a small introduction to next week’s workshop, during which they will be making ornaments using plastic bottles.
Santana also showed the participants some chairs that were created at another workshop by the Children and Youth Library of the Dominican Republic (BIJRD) group using recycled denim fabric.
The objective of the ReCrearte program is to raise public awareness regarding the three golden rules, or the 3Rs, for good solid waste management: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The workshops demonstrate and underscore the idea that recycling and transforming waste into art can strengthen both individuals and their communities.
