SANTO DOMINGO.- ReCrearte, an initiative of the Dominican Environmental Film Festival, held a creative recycling workshop at the Office of Risk Management Insurance on Saturday, January 13, 2018.
Thirty-two participants, adults and children, were beneficiaries of the creative training activity. Employees and their children met in the auditorium at the institution’s headquarters in Ensanche La Fé.
For two hours, Lucia Marte, the creative recycling specialist and coordinator of GFDD/Funglode’s ReCrearte program, showed participants how to use recycled fabric to make cloth handbags.
Ms. Marte’s workshops also encourage family unity and integration through environmental activities. The workshops serve as a space for participants to learn how to make proper use of available resources, such as materials normally considered trash, which can be converted into useful resources for domestic and personal use.
Marte highlighted the positive reactions from participants. For example, one of them, Ms. África Báez, said she was very satisfied with what she learned.
The objective of ReCrearte is to raise public awareness about of the 3 Rs for the proper management of solid waste: reduce, reuse and recycle. ReCrearte workshops underscore the concept that recycling trash and transforming it into art can strengthen both individuals and communities.
The creative process fostered by ReCrearte is combined with exhibitions that seek to increase people’s awareness of environmental problems and issues, while promoting the protection of the planet and its natural resources.
