In an effort to raise public awareness on the importance of protecting and preserving the environment, on March 22, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), through the ReCrearte program, hosted a workshop on making bleached soaps out of ashes and used oil.
More than 23 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15, students at the Perantuen School in Santo Domingo Norte, and 5 women from the community talked about proper management of solid waste and environmental protection.
The activity, carried out in collaboration with the EcoScuelas project of the Institute of Environmental Law of the Dominican Republic (IDARD, for its acronym in Spanish) and the Propagas Foundation, is part of an environmental protection program developed by GFDD with the objective of reducing the amount of waste produced in the country.
According to the coordinator of ReCrearte Lucia Marte, who taught the workshop, "Participants showed availability and commitment to spread the knowledge acquired.”
About ReCrearte
The ReCrearte program works with the most disadvantaged communities, who receive training in the art of recycling and creating new objects from waste and simultaneously learn to develop an alternative source of income. The program revolves around the “three golden rules” (or 3Rs) for the proper management of solid waste: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The workshops demonstrate and emphasize the idea that recycling waste and transforming it into art and objects for daily use strengthen individuals and communities alike.
